New Single: "Sweet Potato Pie"
The good Reverend and the boys have been at it again! We'll be releasing a brand new EP titled The Recession Sessions on May 21st. The first single, "Sweet Potato Pie", has been released to radio stations and is receiving substantial airplay and very positive responses. The self-penned tune is uptempo with plenty of the Rev's good humor and trademark soulful charm. According to Rev. Bubba,
The EP will include five new originals from the Reverend and a cover of Saturday Night Live's Christine Ohlman's "The Deep End". If you can't wait for the release in mid-May, you can hear all of the new tracks in the Music section right now! Stay good y'all.

Why You Wanna Go And Do That
Lyric sheet for "Why You Wanna Go And Do That"
view online enlarge
1. Why you wanna go and do that: This is what I call a "blue-eyed soul groove". I don't consider myself any sort of "great" songwriter. I'm good, sometimes really good, and sometimes not quite so good, but I do like the lyrics on this song, especially the verses. Secondly, it fell in a lower key for my voice and made me bring out my wannabe "Righteous Brothers" impression. Two of my favorite singers of all time are Bill Medley of the Righteous Bros. and Michael McDonald. As far as tracking the instruments, I had fogotton how good an accoustic guitar sounds together with a B-3 Hammond Organ. Another note, I almost named the song "Baby We Go Way Back", but I think either title would work.

You Used To Shake It For Me

2.You Used To Shake It For Me When I wrote the song, I was feeling a little Carlos Santana/Alman Brothers in my mind. When we finished recording the track, the band said it sounded like a cross between James Brown and Delbert McClinton in a club on Boubon Street. As it happens many times, you'll go into the studio with an idea where the song is going and when you finish, it's taken a turn in a different direction. I like to layer percussion instruments throughout a song, and this one has plenty. I really like the timbales on this track. I also dig the sleezy sax solo(Donnie "Sax" Sanders) in the bridge followed by powerful, but very simple guitar solo(Bob Funk). Then, of course, when you think the song is over...............it ain't!

I'll Remember

3. I'll Remember I friend of mine, Dana Jones of the Fabulous Shades said I should write a modern day "Doo-Wap" song, I liked the idea, and started writing "I'll Remember". I wanted to do this song accapela, in the Doo-Wap style, but my bandmates wanted to lay down musical tracks, so that's what we did (At some point, I may record an accapela Doo-Wop version anyway, and just not tell the band). Sam Hankins, our lead guitarist, is also a great singer with a high vocal range. He does all of our background vocal arrangements and he lifted a few ideas from the Beach Boys, giving the song an early 1960's feel. PS: That's not me on the end of the song singing falsetto, it's Sam.

Sweet Potato Pie

4. Sweet Potato Pie: My favorite place to sit and relax or to write songs is on my back porch, and that's where this song was written. I was thinking about endearing names husbands and wives, or boyfriends and girlfriends, call each other (honey, sweetie, sugarpie, etc., so the song developed from there. Of course, I humor myself by saying she calls me her "big stud muffin", which I feel is an appropriate description. You'll hear "Chilton County Peach" which is a county in Alabama known for peaches, a "bushel full of gold" which is they way we measure gold in Alabama, and "she's the Lynard to my Skynard" who sang "Sweet Home Alabama". You probably figured out by now, I live in Alabama and mighty proud of it!

Here I Stand

5.Here I Stand: In the studio, I like building a song. This song starts out simply, just a few instruments in the opening verse, then the full band kicks in on the chorus. We also add some congas and bongos giving it a touch of a latin feel. You'll notice Bob Funk is not doing a lot of strumming on the guitar, he keeps it simple throughout the song and just plays these very tasteful, very soulful licks.

The Deep End

6. The Deep End I was reading M Music Magazine and read a review on Christine Ohlman. I went to her site, listened, and became a big fan. Christine is also the lead singer with the Saturday Night Live band in New York. She wrote and recorded The Deep End, and if I'm not mistaken that Levon Helm (The Band) on drums. I loved the song, contacted her and asked permission to cover it. I'm not the singer she is, so I knew I had to take the song in a different direction. The band members did the arrangement and helped take the song a little more toward an Al Green or Grayson Hugh direction. If you're a bass player, listen to Steve Bryant on this track, simple, solid, soulful, and just a true monster on bass.

1. That's What You Do When You Do What You Do
There's a song by the Swinging Medallions called "Double Shot of My Baby's Love" and the writer talks about his romantic tryst with a girl and how it affected him. Her "lovin" made him turn flips, shout out loud, and finally made him pass out in her front yard. I wrote "That's What You Do" in the same mold. I especially like that, in this song, her "lovin" has him "speaking in tongues".

2. Ain't No American Idol
Sure, there are some good singers on American Idol, but you would think with all their resources, the final 10 or 20 would all be great singers, and that's just not the case. I personally know a dozen amateur singers that could have easily won in almost any year except the first season (I must give props to Kelly Clarkson, like her or not, she can sing). This song is my initiation of a backlash against American Idol the TV show.

In most parts of the country you'll hear people say, "I'm preparing to..", "I'm about to....", or maybe "I'm getting ready to..." But in the South, they say "I'm Fixin' To". Never heard it in a song before, so I thought I'd use it.

4. If You Can't Shag (Get Your Ass Out of Carolina)
I'm a big fan of 60's R&B and Carolina Beach music. Eddie Bailey, of the band The Fabulous Expressions and a former member of the Swinging Medallions, told me his wife taught 8th grade in Greenville, SC, and as part of the required "South Carolina State History" course, each 8th grader had to learn to "Shag" since it is the official State Dance. We were laughing about it especially when Eddie said "If you can't shag, you can't graduate from 8th grade". I thought that was funny and decided to take it a step further in this song.

5. 'Mo Better This Time
Again, just my affection for 60's Soul and R&B, I wanted to write a fun song that made you feel good, like riding around in a convertible on the first day of spring. There's a company that sells a million varieties of hot sauce named "Mo Hotta, Mo Betta", so I ripped them off a little.

6. The Jody Grind
When soldiers are marching or running long distances in formation, the Drill Sergeants help keep their minds occupied by singing songs. Often the Drill Sergeant sings a line and the formation answers back. One of the most popular subjects is to sing about Jody. Jody's the guy back home who is hitting on your girlfriend, driving your Cadillac, took your old job, considered to be a weasel, and intentionally avoided serving his country in the Armed Forces. I'm a patriot and very proud of all those who serve or have served.

9. Let The Eagle Fly
Most college football games have great pre-game programs pumping up the crowds. Auburn University is no exception. Even though they are the Auburn Tigers, their battle cry is "War Eagle" (long story, not enough space). And, prior to the start of each home game, a trained Eagle is released who flies around the stadium several times and then dive-bombs toward the school logo on the 50 yard line. This song will only be significant to Auburn fans.

Folks that vacation along the gulf coast know of an infamous club, the Florabama, which is located right on the Florida/Alabama state line. Auburn Fans
Welcome all you Auburn Tiger fans and War Eagle!
War Eagle! It's obvious I'm an Auburn Tiger football fan and I feel one of the most impressive pre-game activities in the country occurs when Auburn releases an eagle to fly around the stadium then dive bombs to the logo in the center of the football field.
I wanted to write a song that captured the spirit of Auburn and pay homage to this War Eagle tradition.
100% of the proceeds received from the sale and download of "Let The Eagle Fly" will be donated to Auburn's Raptor Center to help continue our beloved tradition. ~ War Eagle! Bubba D.

For Auburn, the truth of matter is no one knows how good or bad this team is?
Individually, there’s a ton of talent, but no one knows if the team chemistry is there. For Clemson, they have some of the same issues as Auburn, they’ll miss Sammy at receiver, but I think they’ll show up with a ton of confidence based on last year’s performance.
Here’s my 2 predictions for the Chik-fil-A Bowl a) there will be a Tiger victory b) mostly traditionally married couples in attendance!
By the way, if you’ll permit me a little bragging, our single “Sweet Potato Pie” reached #10 this week in Cashbox Magazines Top 40 Charts for beach music. Just think, only several hundred thousand more spins at radio and I might be able to upgrade my season tickets! Y’all be cool! Rev. Bubba
Howdy peoples! Our song “Sweet Potato Pie” cracked the Top 10 this week
on Cashbox Magazines Top 40 Beach Music Countdown Chart and on the Endless Summer Network Charts. Me and the Cornhole Prophets are diggin’ it! We were supposed to be playing in Thibodaux LA on Thursday and New Orleans on Friday but some big winded fellow with a bad attitude named Issac ran our ass back to Alabama!
Enough about us, how about some college football? Auburn vs Clemson….hmmmmmm…..I’m betting on the Tigers winning and mostly traditionally married folks attending! I’ll be there and I’ll be easy to spot because I’ll be wearing an orange game-day shirt. Look for me! PS: Special note to my buddy, Ted Bell, at 94.9 the Surf in N. Myrtle Beach. Ted, give “Sweet Potato Pie” a lot more spins………I desperately need a new bass boat! Y’all be cool. Rev. Bubba
I need some suggestions for some great “beach music” to play at our tailgates
afor the Auburn home games this season. I grew up on beach music (originally from North Carolina) but very few people in Alabama know what beach music really is. I know and have a lot of the old school beach, everyone from The Tams, to Garnett Mims, to Willie T, to the Radiants, etc. I need some suggestions on the best beach music songs from the past 20 years, and this is not for the tailgaters to shag to, hell, they don’t know how to shag anyway, but just good listening music.
Two buddies and I ( the other two are both certified “nuts”) have been tailgating at the same spot for over 20 years, we start cooking (maybe a little drinking?) on Friday night and do everything from a whole hog to grilled pizzas depending on who Auburn’s playing. My buddies, Gary and Tom, think they’re music experts, and each week we all make separate compilation CD’s of what we consider great party music and see who did the best job. Of course, they always load up on some worn out Classic Rock, Old School Country, and any songs they can find with dirty lyrics (just to see if anyone pays attention). There are usually about 50 people there and I’ve noticed, every time I put on a beach music CD, they all start diggin’ on it, so I want to step it up.
If you have suggestions of newer beach music that fits a tailgate party, I’d love for you to email me your list at cornholeprophets@gmail.com . Some that I’ve come up with are:
Getaway Car, My Big Sister’s Radio, Easy Comin Out, Boardwalk Angel. I need a lot more and prefer the fun, uptempo songs for this event. Send me your ideas! Thanks, Rev. Bubba
Good news from the east coast!
Our latest single seems to be making some headway with the Beach Music audiences and radio stations particularly in the Carolinas, Virginia, parts of Georgia and Florida. I’m really needing a new bass boat, so I hope it goes #1.
Now I know a lot of our friends in the Mid-West and down in Louisiana and Texas are saying “what’s the Right Reverend talking about this beach music”? It’s not the Beach Boys and it’s not Buffet. I’m not sure I can accurately describe it, but it’s been around for over 50 years, they’ve been doing a dance to beach music, called the Shag, ever since the trend began. Nearly every town in the Carolinas, Virginia, and bordering states have a “Shag Club” where the members get together, listening and dancing to beach music. It’s a mixture of a number of genres from Soul and Blue Eyed Soul, maybe some of that Philly sound, some Motown, Memphis, Chicago, New Orleans mixed in along with some Southern Soul flavors, and occasionally spiced up with a little country. There are dozens of big radio stations that do “beach music” speciality shows, usually on the weekends, and tons of great internet radio shows. Oh yeah, and it goes great with beer!
If you’re interested you can google internet shows like “the largetime network”, “endless summer network” and “yourbeachmusic” to hear some great stuff. Also, a couple of radio stations you might search are “Cool 105″ in Whiteville NC and the flagship station for beach music “94.9 The Surf” in N. Myrtle Beach, SC. N. Myrtle Beach is the Mecca for Beach Music and I think every afternoon around 5pm, fans get on their knees and face N. Myrtle Beach while holding a six pack.
Our band’s music is not considered “authentic” beach music since we dabble in a number of styles, but occasionally we have songs that fit the genre, plus I’ve written a couple of songs that were specifically targeted to beach music audiences just to see if we could attract some new audiences. One was titled “If You Can’t Shag, Get Your Ass Out of Carolina” which helped us get a foot in the door. Anyway, that’s enough for now. Y’all be cool! Rev. Bubba

Rev. Bubba D Liverance & the Cornhole Prophets - All signed up
It was only ever a matter of time before the greatness of rock'n'roll soul survivors Rev Bubba D. Liverance and the Cornhole Prophets was recognized. And now it's happened. These hard livin', fun lovin', good rockin' sons of Alabama have signed to Sony Music Group's Red Music distribution group. The Sony subsidiary will distribute the band's incendiary game-changer of an album - last year's 'Let My Peoples Dance'. The album has since been re-titled as 'Didn't We Love and, with a bunch of new tunes and the clout of the global label behind them, it surely won't be long before this 8-piece horn band are household names. The album was nominated for 'Group Album of the Year' by the Carolina Beach Music Academy, while the past two years has also seen the Cornhole Prophets release a trio of top ten singles on Cashbox Magazine's charts. With three more singles due to come out simultaneously, Red Music is targeting three radio formats: AC, Country and College. And the infectious good time sounds of this uniquely talented band - now with a quality distribution network behind it - mean that it should be successful in all three markets. In its live shows, the band always gives its audience its money's worth. That live energy is communicated in its recorded music. And after signing this deal, Rev. Bubba D. Liverance and the Cornhole Prophets are ready to take that experience to a far wider audience. Watch out world, there's some new Prophets in town.
Rev. Bubba D. Liverance & the Cornhole Prophets - Three in one
Fresh from signing a game-changing deal with Sony Music's Red distribution group, Rev. Bubba D Liverance and the Cornhole Prophets have taken the unusual step of releasing a trio of singles at the same time, targeting three different markets. It's an unusual step by a band that has always eschewed doing things the regular way. But then, that's exactly how this Alabama 8-piece horn band with a penchant for rock'n'roll, soul, country and everything in between, have carved out a name for themselves. The Cornhole Prophets are a band that has always aimed at a broad cross-section of music lovers, and the release of three very different records at once is testament to their ability to cross genres and appeal to people across the generations. New song 'Cold Budweiser' is a rockin' blues stomper aimed squarely at the country radio audience. It is a Bruce Springsteen style anthem for all the hard working blue collar guys (and gals) who just want to kick back after a long day with a cold one and some old-time blues. 'My Baby's a Seafood Platter', released, like 'Cold Budweiser' on April 5, is a jump-jive swinging dancefloor filler with a cheeky line in innuendo-laced lyricism. It's been directed at the college radio market and is sure to have many a student jumping out their chairs and grabbing their partner for a spin on the tiles. 'Didn't We Love', aimed at adult contemporary radio, shows a more contemplative side to the Cornhole Prophets from their normal hard rocking sound. It still rocks, but demonstrates that the band doesn't have to go at 100mph to make an impact. All three songs are classics of their kind. And all three are yet more evidence that Rev Bubba D and his band of good ol' rock'n'roll survivors have a long future ahead of them.
KC Online Soundbites July 2008
Upon seeing the distinctive name of Alabama’s own RBDL & TCP (ok, maybe acronyms don’t always work…) this reviewer felt a little quiver go down his critical little spine. Band names can run the gambit from pompous (U2) to goofy (Flock of Seagulls…what was that about, anyway?) to legendary (AC freakin’ DC!), but some names just take the proverbial cake and the Rev. has done that in spades.

Beatwire.com Press Release June 2008
Rev. Bubba D Liverance says that the album he has made with the good honest folk who form his band, The Cornhole Prophets, is "just for fun." Well, the music may well be fun, but don't let Bubba fool you, because this is one band who know exactly what they are doing. Hailing from Auburn, Alabama, Bubba and his boys play the sort of music you sometimes wish everyone would make: Good honest rock and roll soul, with both heart and a sense of humour. The horns are as funky as anything James Brown could ever dream up, the guitars wail away like the best Stax records of yesteryear, while Bubba sings his heart out just like a good 'ol southern boy should. Put all these together and make them as tight as a band can be, and you've got music that will get everyone out of their seat and on to that dancefloor. It is no surprise, therefore, that the album should be called Let My Peoples Dance. The Cornhole Prophets are all about bringing the people's music back to the people and making it fun. Although the album will no doubt be enjoyed by people in homes, cars and headphones everywhere it is played, The Cornhole Prophets are above all a live experience. The feeling of playing to the audience, bouncing back off a frenzied crowd of converts and just getting funky is what informs this record. It is what makes us feel so fresh and alive. Listen to the raw soul power of the title track or That's What You Do, the dry comedy of My Baby Is A Seafood Platter or the appeal to real, honest music that is Ain't No American Idol and you'll know that Bubba and his band are as far away from the tasteless modern pop band as you can get. This is a band that thinks music should be real, should be live and should reach people. They haven't got a message, other than enjoy yourself and let your feet do the talking. You can call the music rock and roll, funk, soul, rhythm & blues, or even country. But whatever it is, it sure is a whole lot of fun. Give Bubba a whirl and get those toes tapping. Let My Peoples Dance is available to buy from June 2 2008.

Antimusic Review by J. Simpson
"In the end I highly recommend this disc to anybody who likes music at all. Rev Bubba & The Cornhole Prophets just have an honest sound that's very appealing, singable and just about anybody can dance to it, except me, I never could dance"
